In 1966, the
FCC granted a license to build a daytime only station
operating under 500 watts of power.
In 1967, the station was given pre-sunrise authorization
from 6 am to sunrise.
Cornerstone Broadcasting, Inc purchased WYXI and on September 12, 1968. The new studios were moved to the historic Robert E Lee Hotel located at 112 East Madison Avenue in downtown Athens. The format was changed from country to a combination of middle of the road coupled with talk, news, and Christian programming. WYXI was granted permission on December 1, 1987 to operate at night with 62 watts. This gave the radio station an opportunity to operate 24 hours with daytime power of 2500 watts and nighttime power of 62 watts. In January, 2008, Mark and Bob began construction for their new facilities on Cherry Street. They moved and commenced operation in their new facility on June 1, 2008.For over 50 years, WYXI has served McMinn and surrounding counties with some of the best music, entertainment for all the family, and on-the-spot news reports and events.
